Busted

I didn’t really think we would have to make this trip to emergency quite so soon, but…

100_4261

…here we are.

100_4264

Busted.

Berry Baby took a little tumble down our flight of 10 stairs, and after a longish wait in Pediatric Emergency, a trip up to X-ray, and a return trip to Pediatric Emergency, we learned that he had indeed broken his chubby little leg, just under the knee, not too bad.  But bad enough that it had to be casted.

I can just imagine how the next 2 weeks are going to be with him trying to lug that heavy cast around.

I have to say, the Peds Emergency doctor was great.  He was also a runner.  I know this because I was wearing my Jingle Bell Run t-shirt, and we became instant friends.  I love how running does that.  We also ran into an old friend, who now happens to be a Resident in Orthopedics.  I’m pretty sure that he helped things along a bit.

Thankfully, you can’t keep a good kid down…

His brother, on the other hand…

100_4259

has The Puke.  Should be a fun night.

Dearth

306331_di_d

I have to apologize for the dearth of material here on ye olde blogge.

I have nothing to blog really.  I just wanted to be able to use the word “dearth”.  And it’s a good thing that I looked it up to check that it meant what I thought it meant, because otherwise I would have spelled it “dirth”, which isn’t really a word.  Good thing I’m just a bit neurotic about checking stuff like that.

For those of you who can stand the mundane aspects of my life:

The Bottle Ban has been a raging success.  Berry Baby didn’t even require it to fall asleep for his nap today in the playpen at Prairie Chick’s place, with Prairie Chick putting him down for his nap.  He has even slept through the night…once…but he’s a one hit wonder in that area.  Which means that I’m still tired.

My friendly neighborhood massage therapist and I have finally found the swollen spot on my foot that is causing me trouble, and my doctor is sending me off to physio and the podiatrist.  And I am just praying that I will be able to train properly for the impending half-marathon at the end of May.  In the meantime, I am not really supposed to run, which makes me a bit edgy and crabby.  I’m always amazed at what running (or exercise in general) does for my disposition.

The Running Skirt came, and I fear that I lack the confidence and/or the booty to wear it in public.  Plus, there’s a panty-line issue.  So after suffering much angst about it and exhausting some friends with my deliberations, I have decided to trade in the aqua skirt for a black & white skirt, in the hopes that the black will be a little more panty-line concealing.  I am also trying a size up, also to alleviate the panty-line issue.  Barring all success with that, I will trade it in for a sassy long sleeved running shirt with thumb holes.  I love thumb holes.

I am now going to quit torturing you all with this totally unclever and uninteresting blog post and am going to plug in a chick flick, bring up the container of Real Dairy Natural Vanilla Ice Cream that I have been hiding from the boys, pour some chocolate sauce into it, grab a spoon, and veg.

Lessons

149562_time_02

well, apparently Berry Baby reads memos.

Last night, for the first time in I-can’t-remember-how-long, Berry Baby slept through the night.  I know, I can hardly believe it either.

Unfortunately, his poor, tired mother…did not.  Poor tired mother learned an important lesson last night that I will now share with you.

When you have had an upset stomach for a few days, it is not advisable to eat a rink burger and onion rings for supper, chased by a couple of wonderful cups of coffee.  Really not.  The stomach, it does not like the rink burger and greasy onion rings as much as you do.  And the coffee, it keeps you awake for a long time so that you can fully appreciate the stomach cramps.

Let that be a lesson to us all.

Being 5

Sometimes, when you’re 5…

100_4196

it can be very hard

100_4197

to buy a birthday present

100_4201

for someone other than yourself.

100_4200

Especially when it’s something you really like.

100_4202

But eventually,

100_4209

you buck up and get ready to party.

Skirting the Issue

so, I did something yesterday that I’m a bit uncertain about.

I ordered a running skirt.

Yes, I did just say running skirt.  I’ve been toying with the idea ever since Runner’s World did a feature on them.  Yesterday, I happened onto the website, and lo and behold, they were having a sale.  As in 50% off kind of sale.

I couldn’t say no.

So I ordered something that looks like this:

runningskirt

not in that exact color, but you get the idea.  They also had this on sale:

strqppy top thumbnail 1

and I’m in need of a new *good* running bra, so I bought that too.

Here’s the problem (aside from the obvious I’m-running-in-a-skirt self-conscious problem) – I don’t look like this:

cheetah strappy top

That’s one of the creators of Running Skirts.  She looks fabulous.  AND she’s had a baby.  Loser.

So I’m really not sure how this is going to look.  On me.  With my mennonite butt.

And it’s non-refundable (sale).  But it IS exchangeable, so in the event that I look hideous, or just cannot convince myself to be brave enough to wear a skirt while running, I can always exchange it.  I think in that case I will get their long sleeved shirt – it’s all techy and looks nice…

So, quick poll, just out of interest, how many of you…

(a) would run in a skirt

(b) might run in a skirt, but only in the safety of your own home and only if everyone has gone out and left you alone

(c) wouldn’t be caught dead running in a skirt, even if you were offered money to do so

(d) wouldn’t be caught dead running, period

Mushy Mondays

Berry Guy

You made my heart melt…

100_4045

when I asked you to get the boys breakfast after I was up re-settling Berry Baby for half an hour during the night, and you let me sleep in a bit, gave the boys breakfast, changed Berry Baby’s diaper and dressed both the boys, and did the multitude of dishes left over from last night’s fun with company.  You really blessed me this morning.

I love it…

100_3985

when you take time to be with the boys

100_3426

and share your ice cream

100_3652

and love them

100_4205

and make them wooden rifles (and pistols and shotguns)

100_4220

and make up crazy games with them

100_4232

like “magic circle” (among others)

100_4229

You amazed me…

279165_bedroom_bliss

when you arranged overnight child care for the boys and planned a romantic night away for the two of us, with supper at my favorite restaurant and a night at my favorite resort.  I’m so excited for our night away (a night of uninterrupted sleep is BLISS at this point)

I am blessed…

to have been married to such a wonderful man for the last 10 years.

Bottle Addict (part II)

100_3961

So the Berry Baby, he really likes that bottle.

I have been diligently giving him his nighttime bottle in the rocking chair (and not in his crib).  When he wakes at night I have been (semi-diligently) settling him in his crib, and only taking him out as a last resort and allowing him a bit more bottle in the rocking chair (I say semi-diligently because he is sick with some bad bronchitis, and the crying makes it worse, and the less I have to use the inhaler with him the better, so I have to confess I’ve been pretty slack in the middle of the night).

I think he’s on to me.

Here’s why – for the first day or two, we would sit in the rocking chair, snuggle, and he would drink his bottle.  When he had drained it, he would kind of hand it to me and I would put it down and put him to bed.

NOW, we sit in the rocking chair, snuggle, and he drinks his bottle.  And  here’s where he switches it up.  He does not drain the bottle completely, he leaves a little in there.  On purpose.  I’m certain of it.  Then he sits up, tucks the bottle under his arm, and waits for me to put  him to bed.  With his bottle.

I’ll tell you, that kid is smart.

And strong.

He has a death grip on that bottle like you would not believe.

What a stinker.

a little randomness

I have nothing to blog.

But I’m getting that anxious tight-chest feeling because it’s been almost a week since my last post.

People are relying on me to be clever.

Or not.

Either way…I will discuss two things:

302292_bare_feet

First, my foot hurts.  What was an intermittent annoyance is becoming a continuous reality.  Miraculously, when I called my doctor’s office today to book an appointment, I got in only two weeks from now.  Really, I was expecting April.  So I guess that’s good.

But the foot, she bothers me.  Especially since my running is going so well – I feel strong, my runs are more often great than not, and after I run in the evenings I sleep like a log.  I hate to lose ground because of this stupid annoying foot.

Second, I am preparing for my first ever evening shopping trip with two great friends.  It will most certainly involve me peacefully pushing my shopping cart through Superstore whilst sipping my Triple Grande Half Sweet Extra Hot Caramel Macchiato.  It will most certainly NOT involve Berry Baby making multiple grabs for my coffee cup while I try to maneuver the shopping cart with one hand as Berry Boy jumps off and on and off and on and asks repeatedly if I can buy him a toy/coloring book/new car/candy.  It will definitely not involve yelling (unless it’s at the self-serve check out that ALWAYS screws me over and leaves me looking like a complete, red faced, dork), and I don’t anticipate feeling all sweaty and flustered by the time I get everything and everyone out of the cart and into the car.  I’m very excited.

Sometimes…

100_4218

Sometimes, life just gets waaaay too busy with fun committee meetings, small groups, book clubs, work, work from home, and mitigating the disaster in your house that it is nearly impossible to find the time to run.

Sometimes, that’s ok.

But sometimes, you have an appetizer and wine committee meeting followed by the devil White Chocolate Truffle Cake, and even though you had every intention of running when you got home, you are just physically unable to move your body in any way that might resemble exercise, even though you really really need to.

Sometimes, you plan to run right after work, but end up having to take your toddler to see the doctor in a neighboring town to discover that he really is sick and really does need antibiotics and multiple inhalers.  Which cost around $130.  So sometimes you are thankful for the monthly payments into health insurance.

And sometimes, even though it was a long drive complicated by having to find after-school child care for your kindergartener, you are just thankful that you were able to get in to the mediclinic, that you were able to see your favorite doctor there, and that you went before a chest infection became full blown pneumonia, even though it was awfully close.

Sometimes, that neighboring town has a really great bakery, and it would be a travesty NOT to stop, so sometimes it is necessary to bring home half a dozen really wonderful fresh donuts, of which 4 actually make it home unscathed.

Sometimes you really really really need to run, because you just really can’t stop eating bad food.

Please pass the motivation.  I seem to be out.

Addict

100_3821

This stinker Bottle Addict is goin’ down

100_3822

Because Momma ain’t getting up 50 bazillion times per night anymore to give him his bottle every time he wakes up

100_3807

Your day of reckoning is here little man.  And you can give me that cheeky smile all you like.

The gloves are still comin’ off.

Game on.

(all advice and encouragement welcome)
